Happy Memorial Day! Memorial Day started as a remembrance of union soldiers who died during the Civil War. As a young man, I can recall when it became a National Holiday including all the states of the old Confederacy. Today, Memorial Day is thought of as the beginning of summer throughout the United States.Â

Last week the City's new Financial Advisory Committee (FAC) met for the first time. This committee was brought into being by the city council as a political effort to get Measure Y passed by the voters last November. It is my hope that this committee brings some new ideas to the forefront and reviews some of the past committees thought and ideas. Almost 25 years ago there was the Public Finance Advisory Committee (PFAC), that I sat on. At that time, those committee files are on a shelve never to be seen again.

This Monday, the Culver City's City Manager will be presenting the proposed 2013-14 City Budget to the city council. The City Charter requires a balanced budget and it will be, I hope that there will not be too many more cuts in the budget to "balance it."

The U.S. Post Office is facing monumental issues! As a customer of this federal government corporation, they are telling me they do not want my business as a business person or a residential customer. It's not only the post office; there is the United States Congress, too.

What is your definition of Economic Development? Culver City for many years has called economic development community development by sponsoring events throughout Culver City, mostly in downtown. Along with events they have changed many of the requirements for development to help and hinder different types of business categories. The demise of redevelopment in California is forcing changes in economic development, but most important is opportunity. Are we ready for change the way economic development is evaluated?
