We are pleased to bring you the 2019 Economic Outlook event. This first of it's kind event in Culver City will forecast the economic trends and drivers for the nation, state, region and most importantly local economy. Our combination of Dr. Christopher Thornberg (Beacon Economics) and the local change agents will represent a unique and well-timed event for all who have a vested interest in the vitality of Culver City and the surrounding Westside.
The Culver City Chamber will be partnering with Dr. Chris Thornberg of Beacon Economics to present a first of its kind marquee event for our city- the 2019 Economic Forecast. Our partnership with Dr. Thornberg aligns with our mission to provide our members vital, relevant information and foster a climate conducive to business growth. The 2019 Economic Forecast will highlight what the next couple of years will likely bring on a local, regional, and national level.
With a premier firm that was one of the first to forecast the recession, Dr. Chris Thornberg is well renowned in his field. Beacon Economics' data is used by businesses, health care organizations, and can provide a forecast on a macro and micro level.
Special registrants will also have the opportunity to engage with Dr. Thornberg following the event*.
Sol Blumenfeld, Director Community Development, City of Culver City
Sol Blumenfeld has been a Community Development Director in three cities, implementing revitalization, city planning and redevelopment programs. He is currently Community Development Director in Culver City and Assistant Executive Director of the Successor Agency to the Culver City Redevelopment Agency and Housing Authority overseeing the creation of the City’s Transit Oriented Development District around Culver City’s Expo Station, developing affordable housing and implementing streetscape improvements, municipal parking and commercial revitalization programs. Mr. Blumenfeld administered entitlements, land assembly and negotiated development agreements for the 5.5 acre Ivy Station TOD project, which included development rights along Metro right of way, oversaw entitlements for TOD District catalytic projects including Apple’s new creative offices and administered development permits and development agreements for the Culver Public Market and Amazon Studios’ new home at Culver Studios and Culver Steps, the capstone to Culver City’s downtown redevelopment. He directs Current Planning, Advance Planning, Building Safety, Enforcement Services, Housing and Economic Development Divisions.
Previously he served as Community Development Director in the cities of Hermosa Beach and Lynwood, successfully implementing downtown revitalization and redevelopment programs generating major public and private investments in municipal parking, a beachfront resort hotel and pedestrian retail/restaurant promenade. He has training as a California Building Official, guest lectured at UCLA and USC planning programs and taught environmental planning at UCLA Extension.
Mr. Blumenfeld is a graduate of the University of California, Berkeley and received Master Degrees in city planning from the Graduate School of Design at the University of Pennsylvania and in landscape architecture from California Polytechnic University and worked in the fields of architecture, landscape architecture, city planning, urban design and land planning in the public and private sectors as a Planning Director, Community Development Director and Program Administrator.
Tammy Brandt, Chief Legal Officer; Head of Business and Legal Affairs, Dreamscape Immersive
Tammy is Chief Legal Officer; Head of Business and Legal Affairs at Dreamscape Immersive, a leading location-based virtual reality company. Tammy manages legal, business affairs, human resources and facilities. Prior to joining Dreamscape, Tammy served in roles of increasing responsibilities in the legal department of Computer Sciences Corporation, which became DXC Technology, a Fortune 100 company with over 150,000 employees, serving clients in over 100 countries. Tammy’s last role was Chief Corporate Counsel, the #2 corporate lawyer of the company, with primary legal responsibilities for corporate securities, governance, finance, treasury, tax, executive compensation, and global leader on all M&A transactions.
Before joining Computer Sciences Corporation, Tammy was general counsel at ServiceMesh, Inc., a leading enterprise software company in the cloud management space. She successfully led ServiceMesh’s fundraising and successful exit to Computer Sciences Corporation with responsibility for legal, human resources, real estate, facilities and internal operations. Tammy spent the earlier part of her career working at leading global law firms Jones Day and Sheppard Mullin. She has extensive experience in emerging company matters handling needs across a large spectrum from contract negotiation of commercial and real estate agreements, managing intellectual property portfolios and running the human resources department. Tammy has also been recognized by numerous publications and organizations for her work with emerging companies and pro-bono work with the Association of Corporate Counsel.
Tammy grew up on a farm in Ohio growing corn, wheat and soy. She is passionate about her 16 month old son Bobby and golf.
Albert Cheng, Chief Operating Officer and Co-Head of Television, Amazon Studios
Albert Cheng is Chief Operating Officer and Co-Head of Television at Amazon Studios. As COO of the Studio, he leads studio teams responsible for programming and release schedules, TV and feature film music, consumer insights research, technology and applications. As Co-Head of Television, both he and Vernon Sanders lead a team responsible for television creative development, business affairs, casting and production / post-production. Since its inception in 2010, Amazon Studios produces Emmy-winning and nominated shows like The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Tumble Leaf, Transparent, Bosch, The Man in the High Castle, and Catastrophe; Golden Globe winners The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel and Transparent and Oscar winning film Manchester by the Sea.
Prior to Amazon Studios, he was an executive at The Walt Disney Company for fifteen years in a number of roles. His latest position was as Executive Vice President, Digital Media and Chief Product Officer for Disney/ABC Television Group, where he was charged with general management and strategic oversight of digital media for ABC Entertainment, Oscars Digital, ABC News, ABC Daytime, ABC Family, Disney Channel, Disney XD, Disney Jr and SOAPnet. He led a team that oversaw product development, marketing and operations for the Group’s digital media content platforms, including video-on-demand, broadband, web-based and mobile platforms, as well as interactive television technologies. During that time, years before Netflix, Amazon and Hulu, Albert and his team were the first in history to put TV episodes on iTunes in 2005, stream top broadcast shows online in 2006, stream in HD in 2007, first to launch an app on the iPad in 2010, and first to offer live broadcast network feeds in 2013. They won four Primetime Emmys for their work during this period of time.
Albert has also held executive positions at Fox and board roles at BMI and Lifetime and was a strategy consultant with The Boston Consulting Group. Cheng earned a bachelors degree from Massachusetts Institute of Technology and an MBA from Harvard University Graduate School of Business Administration.
Dr. John Jenrette, Cedars-Sinai
Dr. John Jenrette is the Executive Vice President of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Network. He brings more than twenty-five years of experience in healthcare delivery and management that ranges from California to the Midwest. In his role as Executive Vice President of the Cedars-Sinai Medical Network, Dr. Jenrette oversees the organization’s network of primary care and specialist physicians. He is a physician leader who is focused on innovative patient centric, provider led, delivery models that meet the challenges of today’s changing healthcare market. His talents include leadership development and strategic planning; academics and teaching; development and implementation of high level health services, quality, utilization and population health programs and operations. Prior to coming to Cedars-Sinai, he led Sharp Healthcare’s $300 million dollar physician organization with over 1,000 physicians and 600 staff members in San Diego, California. During his time there, he was responsible for strategy, leadership, budget and overall direction for Sharp Community Medical Group Managed Services Organization; where he developed a county-wide network of physicians under multiple payer contracts that maintained a high-level of profitability and top decile performance in quality and efficiency. Dr. Jenrette is a summa cum laude graduate of the Ohio State University School of Medicine. Following a family medicine residency at the Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine, he completed a family medicine geriatric fellowship at the East Carolina University School of Medicine. He began his management career as program director of the Family Practice Residency for the Northeastern Ohio University College of Medicine, where he also served on the academic faculty before transitioning to California in 1993.
Dr. Christopher Thornberg, Beacon Economics
Dr. Christopher Thornberg is Director of the UC Riverside School of Business Center for Economic Forecasting and Development and an Adjunct Professor at the School. He is also the Founding Partner of Beacon Economics LLC. An expert in economic and geographies across the nation. Dr. Thornberg became nationally known for forecasting the subprime mortgage market crash that began in 2007, and was one of the few economists on record to predict the global economic recession that followed. In 2015, he was named to California State Treasurer John Chiang’s Council of Economic Advisors, the body that advises the Treasurer on emerging strengths and vulnerabilities within the state’s economy. Well known for his ability to capture and hold audiences, Dr. Thornberg has presented to hundreds of leading business, government, and nonprofit organizations across the globe. Dr. Thornberg holds a Ph.D in Business Economics from The Anderson School at UCLA, and a B.S. degree in Business Administration from the State University of New York at Buffalo.
