“Look-Is that Big Foot? No-It’s an Independent Contractor!”

The recent enactment of AB5 by the California Legislature has the potential to make independent contractors as mythical as Big Foot sightings.
There are numerous efforts to amend the law and challenges to its validity. But, for now, it is the law in California. The statute is long, convoluted and complicated. Any employers who utilize “freelancers” and/or other independent contractors is at risk of running afoul of AB5.
The California Employment Development Department is aggressively auditing companies of all sizes.
The monetary penalties and liability for misclassifying workers as independent contracts can add up very quickly and could have a disastrous impact on small and medium sized employers.
This program will provide an overview of AB5 and practical guidance how to comply with the law and/or convert contractors to employees.
